Indonesian Underwater Record-Breaking Independence Day Celebration

Underwater flag-rising ceremony for Indonesian 64th Independence Day!

Those who say nationalism is dead are all wet, as more than 2,500 scuba divers set a world record on Independence Day by taking part in an underwater flag-raising ceremony in North Sulawesi.

Divers lined up underwater to attend Indonesian 64th Independence Day Ceremony which has broken Guinness World Record with as many as 2,486 divers in Malalayang Beach, Manado, on Monday, 17th August. The diving process was started around 10 am and proceeded around 30 minutes into the depths of 10 – 20 m. The world record for diving with the most participants was held by Maldives with 958 divers in year 1997.

Rear Adm. Moekhlas Sidik confirmed on Monday that 2,486 Indonesian divers and 76 foreigners participated in the event at Malalayang Beach in Manado, the provincial capital.

The challenge was part of the Sail Bunaken 2009 maritime event being held as part of Indonesia’s efforts to establish the Sulawesi town of Manado as a world-class tourist spot, Navy spokesman Iskandar Sitompul said

ā€œI’m proud to announce we broke the world record for a mass dive on our Independence Day, which was the first independence commemoration to be held underwater in the world,ā€ he said.

Kentucky Grilled Chicken

This is something quite HUGE in the US. Yeah, the fast food nation.

Apparently there’s this KFC coupon named The Oprah Winfrey Show/Kentucky Grilled Chicken Two-Piece Meal Coupon from the site unthinkkfc.com (it has stopped giving out coupons, tho).

This is the free meal given out:

and the coupon looks like this:

It’s funny to see how people response to free stuff. It’s supposedly four coupons per computer using some coupon printer program, however, due to heavy load, they decided to provide a temporary link for a PDF file with the same barcode on the day the offer starts. Oh what a huge mistake!

I read comments in forums that some actually printed 300 pages of the coupons for fun. Since the promotion is for 2 weeks. That’s everyday KFC, and a quick way to obesity and high cholesterol. This is the proof:

Well, we not only have greedy people here, but there’s actually nice people around printing lots and lots of coupons and giving them out to the homeless in their area. How nice of them!

It’s nice to see the that ultimately common grace is still at work :)

Now back to my 70%-course-grade-deciding day tomorrow.

PS: I don’t like the new KGC. Crispy is always the way to go. The thoughts of KFC chicken wings in my city. I can’t wait to go back to Indonesia. I AM OFFICIALLY HOMESICK!!

Real Life Photoshop !?!?!

In an effort to promote original softwares, an Indonesian company called software-asli.com made an advertisement – a replica of the so-called “Photoshop Workspace” with a tagline “as good as it gets”

The result? WOW!

Apparently their office is located in Mangga Dua which is famous site for cheap and pirated stuff. How ironic.

The process of making the above advertisement

What can I say? I’m proud of Indonesians’ creativity :)

Indonesia stampede leaves 21 dead

Map

At least 21 people have been killed and several others have been injured in a stampede in Indonesia, according to local officials and media reports.

The crush happened as people waited for charity handouts from a wealthy family in the East Javan town of Pasuruan.

The cash handouts, of about $4 per person, are a tradition during the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan.

Television footage showed women screaming as they were pushed into a fence by the crowd.

Under a system known as Zakat, wealthy muslims are required to give away a portion of their money to the poor every year.

There were 10,000 people in the crowd waiting to be given money from a rich family according to Indonesia’s state news agency.

Some people collapsed because of a lack of oxygen and others were trampled, the agency said, adding that injured people were being treated in hospital.

Isn’t this just sad?

Just for that $4, people are willing to risk their life :S

Sumatran Tiger Wannabe

Sumatran Tiger Wannabe

Taken from BBC NEWS
An activist from the WWF, the global environment campaign, does an impression of a Sumatran tiger to raise awareness for the most endangered species of tiger – fewer than 400 remain in the wild.

As someone from the island Sumatra, no matter how negative that may sound, I am thinking: should we be concerned?
